British Designer Antony Price, Famed for Creating Looks for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary style architect behind many legendary styles associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and performative fashion, including the light-hued ensembles that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
Price's death comes just weeks after he presented his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "dress" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he started his work in clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to fuse tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the UK's fashion authority.
By the 1990s, he began working on pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including several ensembles for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
With a vocation that covered half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
