New York Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during a recent discussion.
“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”
The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “But I will say this, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that reassures me, given his positive frame of mind and he’s talking that way.”
Authorities issued video stills earlier this week of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt were reported.
The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday near the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a newborn.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd was inactive during the current season, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.
He signed with New York as a new signing in March and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on 2 August and was carted from the field.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of UT in 2019. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd inked a single-season agreement valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
