A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has been granted a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on January 18 in the city of Melbourne.

A Landmark Return to the Australian Courts

Tournament officials confirmed on the weekend that the 45-year-old legend will make a return at the tournament venue a staggering 28 years after her first appearance. Back in 1998, she overcame her younger sister Serena in the early stage before exiting in the quarter-finals to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Summer Swing

Venus had earlier stated in the month of November her plans to play in Auckland, New Zealand, where she was likewise awarded a wild card, two weeks before the Australian Open. Organizers added that Williams is also entered to participate in Australia's Hobart International a following week, just before the action begins at the main venue.

Her most recent visit in Melbourne was in the year 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the women’s singles on two occasions, losing to Serena in the championship matches of 2003 and 2017.

"I am thrilled to return in Australia and eagerly anticipating playing during the Australian summer," Williams said. "I’ve had so many unforgettable memories there, and I’m grateful for the chance to go back to a place that has been so significant to my professional journey."

Williams' overall record at the Australian Open stands at an impressive 54 wins and 21 defeats. This year will mark the 22nd time she has competed in the primary tournament field.

Setting a New Record

Officials pointed out that Williams is set to become the most senior female player to compete in an Australian Open singles competition, eclipsing the mark formerly set by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she lost in the opening round at Melbourne Park in 2015.
