The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Song
The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated adventure from Critical Role, unveiled an exciting opening credits. It features the beloved cast of misfits, misfits, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while teasing at several agonizing backstories for characters including the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
Overall, the intro looks stunning. However, I felt that something was missing in the song choice.
This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition composed by artist the talented musician. This piece originating from the official score of that title, the second release put out by the production company's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful nostalgic choice, and I suspect that devotees of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening fails to capture the excitement and excitement that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when co-founder the performer wrote words to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and fun. Back then, I hadn't seen the follow-up series at that point, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you start an episode of adventurous fun.
The show's opening with "the new song" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of this party, I can't help but feel that its tone is a little off.
Of course, the creators has stated that the animated show will have some changes and variations from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its intro appears as one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to get to know the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on the audio platform and YouTube.
