The New Mayor Vows a 'Dawn' for New York City in Inaugural Address
On his initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” the metropolis, promising “a fresh chapter” and an audacious beginning to his administration.
A Historic Leader
The 34-year-old political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

The ceremony was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.
A Sweeping Platform
Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

- Free buses
- A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households

The estimated $10 billion cost of these initiatives may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the richest residents and big business.
