Entrepreneur Jared Isaacman has been formally approved as the incoming leader of NASA, concluding an atypical selection saga where the President nominated him, withdrew it, and then renominated him.

The billionaire, an private pilot who became the first private citizen to undertake a spacewalk, is also the first NASA administrator in many years to come straight from outside public service.

For many, the legacy of his leadership will be judged on one pivotal challenge: if NASA can land people to the lunar surface before China.

Trump has stated explicitly a desire for the United States to build a permanent lunar base, both to enable resource extraction and to function as a stepping stone for journeys to Mars.

Senate Vote and Political Dynamics

On Wednesday, the U.S. Senate approved the nomination with a decisive vote.

Trump initially pulled Isaacman's nomination in the spring, pointing to a "thorough review of past connections".

At the period, the president was openly clashing with tech billionaire Musk, one of his largest political donors, with whom Isaacman has a working relationship.

Isaacman indicates he is now fully behind the administration's goal to mine the moon, putting him at odds with Elon Musk, who has said that lunar missions is a detour from the goal of travelling to Mars.

Future Direction

In the present global space race, world powers are racing to exploit the Moon.

“Now is not the time for inaction but a time for progress because if we fall behind, if we stumble, we may not recover, and the results could alter the strategic equilibrium here on our planet,” Isaacman told the Senate committee during his hearing.

The billionaire entrepreneur sees fostering more private sector competition as crucial for accomplishing those goals, according to a recently leaked document detailing his plan for NASA.

In his testimony, he supported the blueprint, which he drafted when he was first nominated, but noted it was a developing document.

His openness to rivalry could also cause friction with Musk. Last week, Isaacman praised the award of a major contract to Jeff Bezos's company, which is one of the primary competitors of SpaceX.

In the leaked plan, he recommended NASA should increasingly partner with the scientific community, casting the agency as a "force multiplier for science".

He pointed to the upcoming deployment of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope as a prime illustration.

"And if we be on the verge of something remarkable - like launching Roman - I will consider all avenues to see it launched, even using my own resources if that's what it takes to produce the discoveries," he remarked.

Personal Fortune

According to reports, his wealth is estimated at around $1.2 billion, primarily derived from his payment processing company and the sale of his company that trained pilots and managed a collection of military aircraft.

The top job at NASA will be his initial foray in public office, a break from the immediate predecessors appointed as head of the agency.

He will take over from the former transportation secretary, who has acted as temporary leader since July.
